The Writer's Life and Marketing
The other side of the authors dream.
The part of being an author you are usually least prepared for.
Everyone who publishes a book knows they need to market it. Whether you are trad or indie published, you need to promote your book. What a lot of authors aren’t prepared for though, is just how much marketing is involved. Especially for those of you who are indie authors. I fall into the bracket of indie author, and have learned pretty fast it is essentially a full time job on its own (at least it feels like it).
You have to be consistent with your efforts, and post regularly, finding your target audience and convince them why they should read your book. This fast becomes a game of authenticity and appeal, marketing you the author as well as the book you want to read.
It can be overwhelming at the start, and you can feel like you are screaming into the void as your posts and reels try to attract readers. Posting across various platforms can be time consuming too, and you can feel like you are marketing more than writing. I have a few tips that have helped me get started.
Marketing Advice
You don’t need to be on all the platforms. There are so many out there, and you can get lost trying to cater to them all. Pick one or two, build an audience by connecting with readers and go from there.
Don’t do anything that makes you uncomfortable. Not everyone likes talking on camera, or know how to make these elaborate reels. Know your strengths and work with them. As long as you are being honest and yourself, those who follow will connect with your content.
Word of mouth will be your best marketing strategy. I post all the time about my book, but nothing sells it faster than a recommendation from another reader. This is where ARC readers are great, as they will share their review with their audience, and in turn, share your work with another set of readers.
Consistency is key. You don’t need to post daily, but as long as you are showing up regularly, you will see your audience grow. People have to see something so many times before they decide to buy it. So don’t get discouraged if you aren’t seeing huge progress straight away. Being consistent in your marketing will see you win long term.
Writers are your friends. I have seen both sides of this, and believe me when I say to be friends with your fellow writers. They are not the competition, instead they will be your biggest supporters and be there to guide you when you need help.
You don’t need to do all the extras. Lot’s of authors do PR boxes, stickers, book merch etc, but don’t feel like you need to. Especially in the beginning. Focus on building those connections and selling books first. Don’t go broke trying to keep up. It’s your story that’s important, not the free extra’s you give out. (If you do these fantastic! It’s just not a necessity when you are just starting out and on a budget).
Don’t get trapped in the numbers game. It’s easy to do, and I have fallen into the trap myself. If you become obsessed with the number of likes and comments it will drive you mad. Not to mention make you feel so low when a post doesn’t “do well.” Instead, just keep doing your thing, have fun and revel in the fact that you did it, you published a book!
The marketing side can be overwhelming at the start, so try to remember you did something amazing , and although it might take time, you will find your feet. There is always someone to guide you, and plenty of authors out there in the same boat as you, navigating the same journey. Find them and start the magical life of a published author together. For new authors, my DM’s are always open!
Marketing Platforms
Speaking of marketing platforms, one great one is Book Funnel if you haven’t heard of it. It’s a place you can upload your E-books for download, and a place you can join group promo’s and author swaps. It’s great for new authors, wanting to get their book out there.
Book Fair
For the month of October, my book is a part of C.L. Cannon’s amazing bookfair, featuring 100’s of amazing books by fantasy authors. My own can be found under ‘Fantasy and Adventure.’ Be sure to check it out! Many books are on KU, including my own, so be sure to click the link and find your new favorite read.

What I’m working on.
I am currently hopefully halfway through book 2 of The Crystal Dynasty series. There are a lot of twists and turns just like book one, and the loveable villain Elinor is up to her usual games. I can’t wait to share more.
What I’m Reading
I am currently working through two books on my kindle, one being ‘The Snow Thief’ by Alexandra Louise, and ‘The council of Myths’ by Samantha Renee. Both are fantasy style beginning in the real world, till their main characters get whisked away to a magical land far away. Although both have similar starts, they are vastly different stories, and I am loving them both!
Secret Projects
Behind the scenes, I am working on a book club specifically for Aussie and NZ indie authors, so watch this space. More info is to come!
